Larry Yoakum III
Describe your desk:
A simple desk. One of those $50 desks from Office Depot
Where did you grow up? How has this influence your writing?
I grew up in Valley Center, KS. Smalltown USA is always good for a dark underbelly. I use VC in almost all my stories. In my stories, it has a nexus point of the universe attracting all sorts of monsters and other kooky things.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to tell a tale. I write for myself, what I like. But, if other people find enjoyment in my work, then that is a wonderful thing, indeed.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Depends…on a weekday, getting to work on time as not to be fired. On a weekend, bacon and coffee.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, World of Warcraft, watching the Simpsons
Do you experience writer's block?
Oh yes.
How do you overcome writer's block?
Walk away from the screen for a few moments, and of course, Miller Genuine Draft
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, and I’ve enjoyed the Archangel books by Sharon Shinn.
Do you prefer e-books or physical copies?
Physical. You can’t get an autograph on an ebook.
What motivated you to become an (indie) author? The freedom to do what I want, when I want. I might never make it to the big time, but at least I can stay true to my unique style.
What is your favorite genre to write?
A mix of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy with my own sick sense of humor and twisted world perspective.
Who do you feel has been the most supportive, other than your family?
Fellow indie authors are always supportive of each other.
Do you put yourself into any of your characters?
I have indeed.
Do you have any strange writing habits?
Not that I’ve noticed.
Where do you want to visit that you haven't visited before?
The furthest reaches of the multiverse…or Sheboygan.
When you start a new story or book, do you know how it will end?
My novellas are pretty much mapped out. My short stories, I sort of just go with the flow that pours from my brain. Sometimes I don’t know the direct it will take until I’m on that path.
Do you write every day?
Sadly, no. Sometimes I am so wiped from work that I just want to watch the Simpsons.
How did you choose the genre of your work?
It chose me.
What have you written?
3 books with Publish America which I prefer not to mention. Of my indie books, I’ve written Yoakum’s Collection of Poems and Blurbs, The Targothian: Book I (which will be a series of about 8 or 9 novellas), and I can’t publish it until October, but Yoakums Compendium of Bizarre and Original Stories. Oh, and more on the way.
Where can your books be purchased or viewed?
Online only. Amazon is best, though I do try and keep copies of my book for personal sales.
What are you working on now?
The Targothian: Book II and a story I called Redcap.
When did you decide to start writing?
I wrote a lot of blurbs in high school. I didn’t start really writing my short stories until I was in the Air Force.
Have you ever collaborated with another author?
Not as of yet.
What's your writing process like?
Don’t really have one.
What do you think is the hardest part of writing?
Reading your own stuff several times trying to make sure that all the typos and such are gone
Do you edit as your write or do you write and then go back to edit later?
I usually come back later, but sometimes a typo will stand out as I’m writing and it bugs me so I must correct right then and there.
What's your favorite motivational phrase?
Quit yer belly aching.
What's your favorite film and why?
Empire Strikes Back….it ends on such a down note for the good guys. The bad guys really handed their butts to them in that one.
What's your favorite quote?
I was crazy until life drove me sane (I came up with that one, at least I hope I did)
Which famous person, living or dead, would you like to meet and why?
Bon Scott, he was the last great rock and roll singer.
Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven't included?
I miss Shiner Bock Birthday Beer.
